I was at a cafe in Male’ recently. As usual our conversation ended up in politics. Tonight the conversation revolved around the death of Evan Naseem and the subsequent prison uprising that ensued. The prison mayhem was quelled by the prison guards directly shooting at the inmates, in some cases the prisoners were shot from behind, resulting in the death of three inmates.
In the heated argument we hit a wall when someone in the group said that no one died on that day and no one was shot directly at. I was very sure that there had been deaths but I had no way to corroborate this. Finally we all left assuming that no one was killed on that day. This is not the first time our arguments in coffee gatherings get distorted because none of us really have the patience to seek out truth. Truth is too much work, both in seeking and in continuing to remember.
After wading through the internet I came across the Investigative report complied by the presidential commission which clearly states that inmates were directly shot at, and three inmates died on that day.
